Storing Your Magical Herbs: Best Containers for Dried & Fresh Varieties

For witches and healers using plants in remedies, spells or cuisine, proper storage is key to preserving the potency of your herbs. Whether dried or fresh, herbs require certain conditions to maintain their magical essences over time before use. Follow these tips to choose the optimal containers for your dried and fresh herbs.

Dried Herbs

• Glass jars - Glass jars with tight-fitting lids are best for keeping dried herbs sealed and protected from light, moisture, and air. Keep away from heat sources.

• Dark containers - Using dark colored glass helps block light damage. Amber or cobalt blue bottles work well.

• Tins - Airtight metal tins can also store dried herbs effectively. Ensure they are food-grade and BPA-free.

Fresh Herbs

• Resealable plastic bags - For short-term fridge storage, place fresh herb sprigs or leaves in resealable plastic bags with a paper towel to absorb moisture.

• Glass jar or container - Placing herbs like cut basil, cilantro or parsley in a glass jar with just a touch of water in the bottom keeps them fresh for 1-2 weeks refrigerated.

• Hydroponic growing systems - Special hydroponic herb planters allow growing fresh herbs in water on the counter while harvesting as needed.

• Herb keeper boxes - Some containers are designed specifically for fresh herbs, with a water reservoir in the base and perforated top to extend life.

Properly dried or refrigerated, fresh herbs can retain their aromas, flavors and magical essences for many months when stored correctly in suitable containers.
